Maine Lacrosse Officials  Association
2010 New Officials Training

The Maine Lacrosse Officials Association (MLOA) needs more officials to support boys' lacrosse at Maine high schools, under the auspices of the Maine Principals' Association (MPA).

Who makes a good official?
Lacrosse players or ex-players who want to give back to the sport.
Officials from other sports. Basketball and hockey officials find many similarities. Soccer and football officials can also make the transition. Coaches from other sports.

Do you have the time?
41 Maine high schools play varsity and JV games, primarily on weekday afternoons, from April 15 through June 3, plus JV and middle school tournaments in June.  In addition, 4 MAISAD prep schools play lacrosse. You can expect to receive 2 to 4 assignments a week.

When MLOA officials are not supporting MPA sanctioned (varsity & JV) games, they can also cover middle school and youth association events, which run into June.

What is the pay?
Lacrosse officials are paid at the top rate established by the MPA. For the 2010 season:
    Varsity = $61.50 per game
Junior varsity = $43.00 per game
Mileage = $.42 per mile for first 125 miles, then $.21 per mile. (carpooling encouraged)

What do I have to do?
To become certified as a new official and get a good JV schedule, you need to complete the following training:

February 28, 1-4 PM Introduction to lacrosse & officiating
March 7, 1-4 PM Basic rules & mechanics
March 14, 1-4 PM Intermediate rules & mechanics
(March 21, 1-4 PM snow date to make up earlier clinics)
March 28, 1-5 PM MLOA rules & mechanics clinic
April 3 or 10, tbd On-field work at preseason scrimmages
May 10, tbd MLOA midseason clinic

All training, other than the on-field scrimmages, will be held at the North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) Middle School in Yarmouth.

Again, MLOA needs officials.  You can help!
